My cousin, Diane Steele, sent me a copy of Finding Oz. It is an incredible epic of 19th century America, revealing history never conveyed in my history classes. This was an incredible gift from a cousin I haven't seen in about 40 years. "Wizard of Oz" was one of my first theatrical experiences when I saw a performance of the play at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. I remember being thrilled when the witch flew across the sky and when one of the witches flew on an electric broom! Now, my own daughter has fallen for the Wicked story and we have seen the play twice already. Thank you for telling Frank's story.

Finding Oz by Evan I Schwartz was recommended to me by a friend who listened to an interview of the author on public radio. She knew I read voraciously about children’s books. “Finding Oz” is particularly interesting to me as well as I have been writing/researching my own Great-Grandmother Lillie’s childhood. Schwartz provides such rich detail of life in America in the second half of the 1800’s. The added bonus for me is it holds the double interest: children’s books and the history of one very special story and my own great-grandmother’s era … up close. Loved it!

FINDING OZ: WONDERFUL - 5 out of 5 stars
By C. A Baker (Santa Rosa. CA United States)
I loved this book. I grew up reading all the original OZ books over and over again ... But this book really delves into the facts, and fictions, of Baum and his life going from his childhood all the way past his far too early death.
A brilliant man who gave us one of the first all American children's tales, his books will be a iconic forever.
And this book is a great companion piece to anyone looking to learn more about him...

The Wizard of Oz IS my favorite movie, of all time. When I was 15, forty years ago,I thought to myself, that this story is about spirituality!

Every time we got to the scene that it is revealed by Glinda that Dorothy had the power within her all along to go "Home", I knew the story was bigger than just a children's story.

Now, it has finally been proven with this book! A million thanks to the author for such detail, such linking of spirit and life.

If nothing else, this book is a supreme example of someone who never gave up and that you too can eventually have 'bliss' doing something you love to do.
I was fascinated by the way the author linked specific details in Baum's life to the characters in Oz. AMAZING!!
It was as if Baum was garnering information his entire life for this one book. I guess that is why it is such a periennal favorite. It is about a life that we all identify with...struggles of a young person, finding our own way with the help of strangers, and finally learning what matters most to us.

I have over 800 books at home and I can honestly say that this book was one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read.
If you are an OZ fan, this book is for you!
